To check the alignment of the belt, place a straight edge or laser alignment tool across the face of the pulleys, making sure it touches both pulleys. Then, move the straight edge or laser to the side of the belt and check for any gaps between the belt and the straight edge or laser.

I think the only thing that matters is that you always run it in the same direction. You need to put it back on "backwards" if that is how you ran it. Belts can be run either way from when they are new, the arrow is there just to help you put it back together the way it came apart.

If your vehicle does not have an auto tensioner, insert a pry bar or piece of wood between the alternator and the engine. Run the belt over the alternator pulley, then use the bar to pry the alternator away from the engine and increase the tension on the belt. Tighten the bolts again as you apply tension.

Centre post buckle, plate-style and box-frame buckles look noticably off-centre when lined up with a gig line if the belt loops are symmetrical. These more prominent buckles look best when centred on the body, and are thus centred between the front belt loops.

The chirp makes a series of sharp, intermittent, “rhythmic” sounds. As the belt speed increases, the pitch and volume stay constant, hence why you hear a continued belt chirp when accelerating.

You hear strange sounds, smell burnt rubber, or see steam: When a serpentine starts to go bad, you'll often hear an annoying squeaking or chirping sound under the hood. Another sign you'll want to look out for is the smell of burnt rubber, as this smell can indicate the serpentine belt is failing.

The directional arrows are only there to help you line up the timing marks, and it's by no means obligatory to use them, because – as we've said before – a new timing belt can operate in either direction.
