No other hotel can possibly be better when it comes to the view over the bay and the Portofino peninsula. It is located up the hill, with a private sea water swimming pool and direct access to a private beach. We had a room with a balcony and sea view and we never tired of watching the lights come up, the sailing boats, the amazing beauty of the coast. Few reviewers mention it, but it should be said: in the 1930's a coastal road was built right along the beach and exposes Santa Margherita, as well as all the other great hotels all the way to Portofino to the non-stop noises of bikes and cars. The Imperiale nonetheless was a tremendous place to stay as is was a bit above from the road with great service. Make sure to dine once in the extraordinary, gourmet restaurant, Novecento. The gardens are lush, the service friendly. The bar/terrace menu was uneven, with marvelous food from the ”gourmet list” and bland white bread sandwiches that I would not have expected out of an Italian kitchen. You have to take a 7 mn. walk downhill to reach the town and the restaurants lining up the seafront. Enjoy them, going back up will take care of the calories. Our room was elegant and the marble bathroom perfect.

The hotel is designed in the style of a nightclub... the local five-star, it does not seem to have reached it, and it is not as large as a small boutique hotel. The breakfast is not rich in variety, and the service is okay.

On our Genova & Liguria Levante rail trip we made Santa Margherita Ligure our base. Again, aiming for hotel in easy walking distance to the train station we were welcomed by the Metropole. Run by the Ciana family since the start in 1897 there still this feeling of personal attention. We got one of two junior suites (larger rooms) in the villa Porticciolo, with stunning views of the bay. New, soundproof windows and a new bathroom – we opted for a shower for more space – and a working heating made our room comfortable. – Pre-season being a cold experience at some waterfront hotels. The garden grounds needed some warmer days an a bit more grooming to be fully appreciated but the view from the terrace was already great. We enjoyed two great in house dinners – eager to explore as many of their regional pastas as possible we asked for expert advice and split portions and were served with friendly elegance. Liguria is not spaghetti or pizza territory – but the marriage of sea and garden creates some flavors. Here the green from the Italian tricolor dominates the red! We enjoyed our stay – thank you!

The staff were all fantastic and very helpful at dealing with our requests, helping us book taxis etc. The room was clean and pleasant with a nice bathroom and shower, the continental breakfast buffet was great and the views from the pool were great. The booking system for the pool meant you had a guaranteed slot but could only use it once a day. It is a shame that it costs so much money to use the beach, particularly paying $50 for two sunbeds when there's only one of you. I would happily stay again if you could use the private beach for free as a guest.

This hotel is conveniently located close to the harbour and restaurants. It's also close tot he bus stop which goes to great beaches and Portofino. Staff were friendly and helpful. I went to the spa which was open between 2pm to 8pm, it was very enjoyable and relaxing experience. Breakfast had a lot of good qualify food. I was very pleased to have stayed there.
